The Grand Rice Dansala, hosted by GHR on the 14th of May 2025, was a major highlight of the Buddha Rashmi Vesak Zone at the Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo. The opening ceremony was attended by the Chief Incumbent of the Gangaramaya Temple, Venerable Kirinde Assaji Thero, GHR’s Chairman Mr. Dasun Wickramarathna, and a distinguished group of religious, political, and community leaders. Together, they marked this special moment in the spirit of Vesak and giving.

The Buddha Rashmi Vesak Zone was jointly organized by the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple, the Presidential Secretariat, and the Prime Minister’s Office. It took place from the 12th to the 16th of May and was ceremonially inaugurated by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. The celebration brought thousands of people to Colombo to witness traditional Vesak decorations, religious observances, and vibrant cultural activities.
Among the most memorable elements was GHR’s Grand Rice Dansala, which served freshly prepared meals to over 20,000 people throughout the night. The event began with blessings, a parade, fireworks, and the lighting of Vesak lanterns, creating an atmosphere of peace, joy, and devotion.
People from across the country came to take part in the celebration. One visitor, beaming with happiness, said they had traveled from Kegalle to see the Vesak lights and were overjoyed to find such a wonderful rice Dansala. They added that the food was tasty, the hospitality warm, and they were thankful for the kindness shown by GHR. Another participant from Kurunegala shared that this was their first time at Gangaramaya for Vesak and that they felt truly welcomed. They said the food was delicious and the whole experience filled their heart with gratitude. With the support of the Sri Lanka Army and Police, the event was well-organized and safe, allowing everyone to enjoy the moment comfortably despite the large turnout.
This act of giving reflected the true spirit of Vesak. For GHR, it was more than just a meal. It was a chance to give back, connect with people, and share kindness and togetherness.
